Recently released findings from the California Department of Public Health demonstrate that non-cigarette tobacco products are becoming more accessible to youth. These findings are part of new research recently released in the availability and marketing of products of tobacco, alcohol, condoms and healthy and unhealthy food options. An initial survey was conducted across the state in March 2014 and a follow-up survey was conducted in the summer of 2016. More than 7,100 stores throughout the state were surveyed including; pharmacies, supermarkets, delis, convenience stores, liquor stores and tobacco-only stores.
The survey found the following for the Tehama County:
- Since 2013, the percentage of stores in the county selling cigarillos, a small cigar, has increased from 85% to 94%.
- Since 2013, the percentage of stores near schools that sell Swisher Sweets (a brand of cigarillos) for less than $1.00 has increased from 88% to 100%.
